Inspired Makeup Monday: Harpy
Today’s creature depicting female hellishness is the harpy. As per Wikipedia, a harpy “was a half-human and half-bird personification of storm winds” as depicted in Greek mythology. When looked up on Dictionary.com, a harpy is defined as “a ravenous, filthy monster having a woman's head and a bird's body”, a “scolding, nagging, bad-tempered woman [or] shrew”, and “a greedy, predatory person.”
A truly ferocious and dastardly way to depict someone, if I do say so myself. Now, I am not so narrow minded as to say every creature of ill report was based off a woman or that the creation of female monsters was directly used to control the ladies of Homer’s Greece. However, there is something to be admired about a woman so ferocious she is only matched by storms and makes men quake at the thought of her power.
There may have been a man or two who’ve chuckled under their breath thinking about the bemoans of the women in their life as bird squawks but maybe they’d change their minds if that also included razor sharp talons with the ability to gut them chin to navel. I’d like to think so.
